Jiu-Jitsu
Jiu-Jitsu means “Gentle Art” in Japanese. It is a grappling martial arts system that has evolved from the monks in India, to China, and then to Japan.
Later, it was introduced to Brazil, where it was retooled and tailored so that someone smaller and weaker would be able to control and submit someone bigger and stronger.
This is when it developed its distinct identity now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There are several branches of the Gentle Art:
Self-Defense
It is imperative to know and be able to apply the concepts of self-defense. Not only is this the fundamental part where you learn about balance, base, leverage, and distance, but it is also where students learn how to control their emotions in a safe environment.
No-GI Submission Grappling
This is a mix of several other grappling sports and martial arts where the idea is the same as the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but it is practiced with a rashguard, shorts or spats, or your Gi pants, as opposed to a full Gi or Kimono.
The Sport of
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Incorporating the uniform called a “Gi” or “Kimono,” Jiu-Jitsu involves taking down the opponent, controlling them, and potentially submitting them through the application of joint locks and chokes. Sport Jiu-Jitsu also typically has a points system and time limits.
BJJ For MMA
That is where we adapt the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) techniques into real fighting or the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), in order to control and potentially submit the opponent.
